The two popular pension payments administered by the federal government are the CPP and OAS.

CPP benefits include a retirement pension, post-retirement benefits, survivor’s pension, children’s benefits, and death benefits.

Old Age Security (OAS) benefits also include the Guaranteed Income Supplement and benefits for an eligible spouse or common-law partner.

How Much OAS Will You Receive?

OAS amounts depend on how long you have lived in Canada after turning 18.

The maximum monthly payment in 2023 is $687.56 for ages 65 to 74 and $756.32 for seniors aged 75 and over.

Starting at $79,845, OAS payments are clawed back at 15 cents for every $1 above the threshold amount.

Low-income seniors may also qualify for GIS payments of up to $1,026.96 per month if their annual income is $20,832 or less.

Several benefits are issued by the CRA to eligible Canadians on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Some are paid on behalf of provinces, such as Ontario and Alberta, while others apply across the country.

CRA Benefits available in 2023 include:

Canada Child Benefits (CCB): This is a tax-free payment to eligible families who have children under 18 years of age.

GST/HST Credit: The goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit is paid every quarter to families and individuals who have a low or modest income.

This tax-free payment is aimed at helping cover the costs of GST or HST paid for goods and services.

Ontario Trillion Benefit (OTB): Ontarians with low-or moderate-incomes may be eligible for one or more of three credits:

  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit
  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit

Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB): This is a tax-free benefit paid to eligible families with children under 18 years of age in Alberta.

Canada Workers Benefit (CWB): You can get advance payment for up to half of the CWB tax credit and the remainder after filing your taxes.

Veterans Disability Pension: Eligible veterans receive a monthly tax-free benefit based on their service and the severity of their condition (i.e. disability).

How Much CCB Will You Receive?

The maximum CCB payment per child under age 6 is $583.08 per month or $6,997 per year.

For kids aged 6-17 years old, the monthly CCB amount is $491.91 or $5,903 per year.

How much you receive is based on your family’s net income, how many children you have, and their ages.

GST/HST Payment Dates for 2023

GST payment dates for 2023 occur every quarter on:

  • January 5, 2023
  • April 5, 2023
  • July 5, 2023
  • October 5, 2023

How Much GST/HST Will You Get?

The GST/HST payment amount for the July 2022 to June 2023 period is:

  • $467: Single individuals
  • $612: Married individuals or if you have a partner
  • $161: Per child under age 19

You don’t receive this credit if your income exceeds a threshold.

For example, single individuals with incomes exceeding $49,166 do not get GST/HST credit payments.

How Much OTB Will You Receive?

OTB payments depend on how many of the credits you qualify for and other factors.

The maximums are:

Northern Ontario Energy Credit: Up to a maximum of $162 for singles and $249 for families.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit:

  • Up to $1,121 (ages 18-64)
  • Up to $1,277 (age 65 and over)
  • Up to $249 if you live on a reserve
  • $25 if you live in an eligible residence at a post-secondary school

Ontario Sales Tax Credit: Up to $324 per individual.

Alberta Child and Family Benefit Payment Dates 2023

ACFB payments in 2023 are made on:

  • February 27, 2023
  • May 26, 2023
  • August 25, 2023
  • November 27, 2023

How Much ACFB Will You Get?

The maximums are:

  • First child: $110.83/month
  • Second child: $55.41/month
  • Third child: $55.41/month
  • Fourth child: $55.41/month

ACFB payments are clawed back when your family income exceeds $24,467 and stops at an income over $41,000.

There is also a working income component that’s paid to families when they have earned income exceeding $2,760:

  • First child: $56.75/month
  • Second child: $51.66/month
  • Third child: $30.91/month
  • Fourth child: $10.25/month
